Online Scams and Fraud in Europe

Online scams and fraud are deceptive activities over the internet to steal personal information, money, or access to accounts. Common types in Europe include phishing (fake emails/texts), romance scams, fake shopping websites, tech support scams requesting remote access, and malware/ransomware. To protect yourself, be wary of unsolicited messages, don’t click suspicious links, use strong security software, and be skeptical of deals that seem too good to be true

Protect yourself against online scams

Be cautious of unsolicited emails, texts, and calls, and never click on suspicious links or download unexpected attachments; instead, verify any requests by contacting the company directly through an independent phone number or website. Finally, monitor your bank and credit card accounts regularly for unauthorized activity and limit the amount of personal information you share online.

Phishing Scams (fake emails/texts)

In a phishing scam, you might receive an email that appears to be from a legitimate business and is asking you to update or verify your personal information by replying to the email or visiting a website. The web address might look similar to one you’ve used before.

Romance Scams

A romance scam is a type of confidence trick where a fraudster creates a fake online profile to feign a romantic relationship to gain a victim’s trust and affection, ultimately to steal money or personal information. Scammers often build a relationship over a long period through online contact, then use emotional manipulation to ask for money for fake emergencies, such as medical bills or travel costs to visit, before disappearing.

Fake shopping websites

Spoofed websites are fraudulent sites that are made by cyber criminals who want to steal your money and information. They can be difficult to spot because they’re designed to imitate the look and feel of legitimate retailers. Some fake online stores will even go as far as creating their own “brand” to trick customers. What is website spoofing? Website spoofing creates a fake website that poses as a legitimate website, typically of a well-known company or organization.

Tech support scams

Tech support scammers try to scare you into believing there’s a problem with your computer. They tell lies to get your financial information or remote access to your computer. Their goal is to steal your money, or worse, steal your identity.

Malware/ransomware scams

Malware and ransomware scams are cyberattacks where attackers use malicious software to lock or encrypt a user’s files and demand a ransom for their release. These scams spread through various methods, including phishing emails, malicious links, and infected websites, and often target individuals and large organizations. While payment may be demanded, there is no guarantee the attacker will restore access, so prevention and reporting are critical.
